Interested in becoming a model? Sometimes getting a foot in the door is as easy as knocking on it… at an open call.

Have you ever wondered where fashion magazines and beauty product marketers find their models? Customarily through reputable modeling agencies within close proximity to where the production of their media is set to take place. All of these agencies accept material submissions from representation-seeking models through mail or e-mail, while a select number of these agencies additionally offer an open call.

Unannounced visits from aspiring talent are unwelcomed, as they can be disruptive to agency business operations. Because many agencies do have a desire to meet potential models in person, they set specific times and dates aside for this purpose.  This allotted face-to-face time is referred to as an open call.
Can Anyone Attend an Open Call?
While petite, commercial and lifestyle modeling is open to models of all heights, ages and sizes, open calls conducted at top agencies commonly target teenage models taller than 5’8” in height. Aspiring models who come close to meeting these targets are oftentimes equally encouraged to apply.

What to Expect at an Open Call

At your average open call, a dedicated scout meets with potential models one-on-one, in order of arrival. Oftentimes the elimination process begins even before the one-on-one meeting occurs. Those who experience this early rejection should not take it to heart. Perhaps the agency has reached its quota for blondes, which the rejected applicant happened to be.

The agency scout will want to review your photographs. Though agencies do not require applicants present professional photographs, many veteran models agree, professional portfolio shots do increase your chances of landing a contract. If you decide to invest in professional photographs prior to attending an open call at the desired agency in which you’re seeking representation, contact the agency ahead of time and request a photographer referral list. Using an agency recommended photographer will ensure quality results that can later be used for booking purposes once signed.

Interested scouts will additionally take height and weight measurements. Fit models are always desirable, but don’t confuse the term fit with the term thin. Most agencies have a plus size model division. Plus size models are in great demand.

Models may additionally be asked to have a test photograph taken, walk the runway or cold read from a commercial script during an open call.

Additional Open Call Advice

Because waiting rooms are typically small and crowded with other aspiring models, it’s best if you leave your friends and family behind.  Models under the age of 18 should bring one parent or guardian along in the event a contract is offered and requires execution.

Wear casual, figure flattering clothes and wear minimal make-up. High heels are acceptable, but expect to remove them when measurements are taken.

Availability and a willingness to travel is often discussed when the scout has a strong interest in working with a potential model. Clients of agencies don’t work around school and work schedules. The more you have the ability to convey the possibility of future modeling jobs as your top priority, the better your chances are of landing a contract.

Undoubtedly, friendliness is the best way to win over the agency scout. Entitled attitudes are indicators of someone difficult to work with.  Conversely, a genuine smile and a positive demeanor is a sign of someone they feel could best represent the agency while working for a client.
